The 2026 National Disability Sports Gala in Soroti City opened another route into wheelchair rugby. UWRF's event record describes participation involving Soroti and Gulu community groups, Gulu University, and Makerere University Business School.
Taking the sport beyond Kampala matters. A regional introduction allows people to see a rugby chair, understand how contact and ball movement work, and ask practical questions about joining without first travelling across the country.
A shared introduction to the game
The outdoor session brought athletes, students, community organisers, and disability-sport participants into one space. Demonstrations can turn an unfamiliar sport into something people can picture themselves playing, supporting, coaching, or helping to organise.
University involvement also creates useful connections to venues, volunteers, research, physiotherapy, and future club development. Community participation keeps those pathways connected to the people the sport is intended to serve.
What comes after a demonstration
A gala is a starting point rather than a permanent training programme. Sustainable participation needs suitable chairs, a safe court, transport, local organisers, trained officials, and a regular schedule. UWRF is working to connect interested groups with the next practical step.
Community organisations and institutions in eastern or northern Uganda can contact the federation about an introductory session, equipment partnership, or pathway into existing activities.
